The Temple Theatre transformed screenings of Lost on a Mountain in Maine into a memorable educational experience by welcoming hundreds of students from across northern Maine for a special series of school presentations in November 2024. In partnership with 13 school districts stretching from Millinocket to Fort Fairfield, the theatre gave students the opportunity to see the film adaptation of the beloved Maine story they had been studying in their classrooms, bringing Donn Fendler’s extraordinary journey to life on the big screen.

Determined to make the experience more than a traditional movie outing, Temple Theatre Manager Jason Howe worked directly with the filmmakers to create an exclusive program for participating schools. Before the film began, students were greeted with personalized video messages from lead actor Luke David Blumm and director Andrew Kightlinger, who shared insights into the filmmaking process and encouraged students to think about the themes of perseverance, courage, and resilience that have made Donn Fendler’s story an enduring part of Maine’s history. These special introductions gave students a behind-the-scenes perspective while creating a meaningful connection between the audience and the people who brought the story to the screen.

The educational screenings demonstrated the Temple Theatre’s commitment to using film as a tool for learning and community engagement. By connecting classroom lessons with a cinematic experience, the theatre helped students gain a deeper appreciation for one of Maine’s most inspiring true stories while showing how literature can be brought to life through the art of filmmaking. Teachers and students alike were able to share in an experience that extended learning beyond the classroom and encouraged thoughtful discussion long after the credits rolled.

Programs like Lost on a Mountain in Maine reflect the Temple Theatre’s mission to serve as more than an entertainment venue. Through partnerships with schools, filmmakers, and community organizations, the theatre continues to create educational opportunities that inspire curiosity, celebrate Maine’s rich heritage, and make the arts accessible to audiences of all ages. By combining storytelling, history, and community collaboration, the Temple Theatre remains a place where learning and entertainment come together in meaningful and lasting ways.
